For many students, a breakdown in text comprehension begins when they encounter language that doesn’t mean exactly what it says. This interactive set provides the targeted practice needed to interpret figurative meanings, reducing frustration and building the foundations for advanced oral and written communication.

• Idioms (50 Activities): Mastering common expressions like “break a leg” or “under the weather” where the meaning is culturally specific.

• Similes (25 Activities): Understanding comparisons using “like” or “as” (e.g., “brave as a lion”).

• Metaphors (25 Activities): Deciphering direct comparisons that state one thing is another (e.g., “the snow is a white blanket”).

How to Use:

1. The Phrase: Read the figurative sentence on the card (e.g., “She has a heart of gold”).

2. The Analysis: Ask the student, “Does this mean her heart is actually made of metal, or is it a hint about her personality?”

3. The Choice: Select the answer that best explains the figurative meaning.

4. The Spot On! Moment: Touch the Spot On! Pen (sold separately) to the dot.

   • Green Light: Excellent! You’ve mastered the metaphor.

   • Red Light: Not quite—think about how the two things are being compared and try again!
