Rainbow CVC Objects — Interactive Phonemic Awareness & Phonics Kit

Bring early literacy to life with Rainbow CVC Objects! This tactile set of 40 magnetic foam objects is a powerhouse for teaching Consonant-Vowel-Consonant (CVC) patterns. By moving from abstract letters to 3D representations of words like bat, fan, and pig, you provide students with the multisensory “hook” they need to master foundational reading skills.

How to Use Rainbow CVC Objects for Skill Building

1. Phonemic Segmentation (Breaking it Down)

Place an object, like the Pig, on a magnetic whiteboard.

  • The Task: Ask the student to identify the three individual sounds they hear: /p/ – /i/ – /g/.

  • Kinesthetic Twist: Have the student “tap out” the sounds on the table for each part of the object as they say them.

2. Phoneme Blending (Putting it Together)

Say three sounds slowly: /b/ – /a/ – /t/.

  • The Task: The student must listen, blend the sounds in their head, and “hunt” through the box to find the Bat.

  • The Goal: This builds auditory processing and the “mental glue” required for decoding.

3. Vowel Sorting (Medial Sound Isolation)

The middle vowel is often the hardest for kids to hear.

  • The Task: Create five “vowel houses” (A, E, I, O, U) on your whiteboard.

  • The Play: Have students sort the objects into the correct house based on the middle sound (e.g., Cat goes to ‘A’, Bus goes to ‘U’).

4. Beginning & Ending Sound “I Spy”

  • The Task: “I spy with my little eye an object that ends with the /n/ sound.”

  • The Play: Students scan the objects to find the Fan or Sun. This sharpens sound isolation skills in different word positions.

Product Highlights

  • 40 Magnetic Foam Objects: Diverse images covering a wide range of CVC word families.

  • Hands-On & Tactile: Perfect for kinesthetic learners who struggle with traditional paper-and-pencil tasks.

  • Magnetic Versatility: Use them on whiteboards, cookie sheets, or any magnetic surface for small group or individual therapy.

Science of Reading (SoR) Aligned: Supports the evidence-based transition from oral language to phonemic mastery.

Clinical Tip: The “Mystery Bag” Routine

Place 5–10 objects in a small cloth bag. Have the student reach in, pull one out without looking, and name it. Before they can “keep” the object in their pile, they have to segment it into its three sounds. This simple element of surprise keeps engagement high and turns a standard drill into a favorite game!
