Vocabulary Vault Double Dice Add-On Deck

The Vocabulary Vault Double Dice Add-On Deck turns vocabulary acquisition into a mini-adventure. Designed for high engagement and deep processing, each card provides a multi-layered look at a single target word. By using a vivid photo and a “kid-friendly” definition as a starting point, this deck moves beyond simple memorization to help students truly “own” new words through four distinct, interactive pathways.

The 4 Interactive Dice Prompts

When students roll the Double Dice (sold separately), they are challenged to interact with the target word in one of four ways:

  • Synonyms: Finding “hidden” words that mean the same thing to expand their internal thesaurus.

  • Sentence Usage: Applying the word in a personal or situational sentence to demonstrate functional mastery.

  • Which Word Doesn’t Belong: Strengthening semantic boundaries by identifying words that don’t fit the concept.

  • Naming Related Items/Places/Situations: Connecting the word to real-world contexts and associated ideas.

Why It Stands Out

  • Vivid Visuals: High-quality photos bridge the gap between abstract words and concrete concepts, making it ideal for visual learners and ELL students.

  • Kid-Friendly Definitions: Language is simplified so students can explain the word in their own terms without relying on “dictionary-speak.”

  • Critical Thinking: The “Which Word Doesn’t Belong” prompt forces students to use “exclusionary logic,” which is a high-level cognitive skill.

  • Deep Semantic Encoding: By looking at synonyms and related situations, students build a “web” of meaning around the word, making it much easier to retrieve during conversation.

Example Activity: Target Word “Gigantic”

If the Dice Lands on… The Student Might Say…
Synonyms “Enormous, huge, or massive.”
Sentence Usage “The blue whale is so gigantic it is bigger than my house.”
Which Word Doesn’t Belong “Tiny… because it means the opposite of gigantic.”
Related Situations “You might see a gigantic skyscraper or a gigantic elephant at the zoo.”
