Receptive One-Word Picture Vocabulary Test, 4th Edition (ROWPVT-4)

The ROWPVT-4 is an individually administered, norm-referenced assessment that measures how well individuals—ages 2 years through 80+ years—can understand vocabulary by matching a spoken word (in English) to one of four full-color pictures.

Now featuring expanded norms through geriatric ages (80+), the ROWPVT-4 can be used across the lifespan, including with persons who have experienced stroke, concussion, traumatic brain injury, or neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s.

Administration & Scoring

The examiner speaks a word, and the examinee points to or says which of four pictures matches. The test uses age-based starting points and ceilings (discontinue after a set number of consecutive errors), so only the critical range of items is administered. The ROWPVT-4 is untimed, takes about 20 minutes to administer, and generally less than 5 minutes to score. Raw scores are converted into standard scores, percentile ranks, and, if needed, age equivalents.
